Biographie
Danois d’origine, Grönvold travaille d’abord dans une station de recherche biologique de Copenhague comme dessinateur. En 1892, voulant tenter sa chance en Amérique, il s’arrête à Londres où il trouve un emploi au British Museum. À partir de 1895, il fait carrière comme artiste. Ses illustrations sont reproduites dans les périodiques spécialisés tels que les <em>Proceedings</em> et <em>Transactions of the Zoological Society</em>, <em>Ibis</em> ou <em>Avicultural Magazine</em>. De 1910 à 1927, Grönvold s'associe à l'ornithologue Gregory Mathews pour réaliser <em>Birds of Australia</em>, un ouvrage en 12 volumes, qui complète l'œuvre de <a href="/omeka/items/show/137">John Gould</a>. Il exécute pour ce seul ouvrage 600 planches coloriées à la main. Grönvold produit des illustrations à la fois exactes au plan ornithologique et attrayantes du point de vue artistique, en donnant de la vitalité à ses sujets, et cela, même s’il ne peint toujours qu'à partir d'oiseaux naturalisés. Il excelle dans la représentation d'oiseaux de petite taille et dans les variations de coloris. Du point de vue technique, l'œuvre de Grönvold caractérise la fin du 19e siècle et le 20e siècle. Il est le dernier des grands illustrateurs à utiliser les lithographies coloriées à la main.
