<p>Dès l'enfance, cet artiste allemand étudie et dessine les animaux et plus particulièrement les oiseaux. À l’âge de seize ans, il commence à travailler pour une entreprise spécialisée en lithographie. Il travaille ensuite pour des musées d’histoire naturelle comme celui de Darmstadt dirigé par Johann Jakob Kaup ou encore celui de Leyde dirigé par Hermann Schlegel. À partir de 1848, il offre ses services au British Museum de Londres.</p>
<p>Il demeure à Londres jusqu’à sa mort et produit de nombreux dessins pour la <em>Zoological Society of London </em>afin d’illustrer les articles scientifiques sur les espèces rares et exotiques provenant des colonies britanniques<em>. </em>Ses observations sur le comportement des animaux l’a conduit à collaborer avec <a href="/omeka/items/show/13">Charles Darwin</a> pour son ouvrage intitulé <em>The expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. </em>Il a aussi illustré le travail d’autres scientifiques et explorateurs de l’époque comme Livingstone et <a href="/omeka/items/show/146">Alfred Russel Wallace</a>. </p>

Biographie
<p>Naturaliste anglais, Alfred Russel Wallace est l’un des fondateurs de la zoogéographie. Issu d’une famille nombreuse peu fortunée, il abandonne ses études à l’âge de 14 ans poursuivant seul son instruction. Il devient instituteur à Leicester en 1844. Passionné par la zoologie, il fait la rencontre du scientifique Henry Walter Bates. Il se joint à ce dernier pour explorer l’Amazonie puis part seul étudier les espèces animales et végétales du Brésil. Il rentre ensuite en Angleterre et publie quelques ouvrages sur ses résultats de recherche puis repart explorer l’Asie et l’Océanie. Au cours de ces expéditions, il parvient à des conclusions sur l’évolution et la sélection naturelle identiques à celles de <a href="/omeka/items/show/13">Charles Darwin</a>. <span>Les deux hommes partagent ainsi la découverte des principes de la sélection naturelle</span>.</p>
<p><span lang="en-US">Wallace fait aussi publier une œuvre magistrale </span><span lang="en-US"><em>T<a href="/omeka/items/show/39">he Geographical distribution of Animals with a study of the relations of living and Extinct Faunas</a>. </em></span>Dans cet ouvrage, il montre la répartition géographique des espèces par rapport à une ligne imaginaire – qui portera son nom. Considéré comme le père de la zoogéographie (ou biogéographie animale), il répartit les espèces animales en six zones restées en vigueur dans le monde scientifique jusqu’à une période récente. </p>

Biographie
Ornithologue américain, Roger Tory Peterson est célèbre pour avoir popularisé le guide de poche (field guide). À ce titre il est s’est avéré un vulgarisateur inégalé en son domaine. Après des études en design, il devient professeur d'art et de sciences dans une école de la banlieue de Boston. Son premier guide, <em>A Field Guide to the Birds</em>, publié par Houghton Mifflin en 1934, remporte un succès inespéré. Le tirage de 2000 exemplaires est épuisé en une semaine. De son propre aveu, Peterson aurait été influencé par Ernest Thompson Seton et son livre <em>Two Little Savages</em> pour ce qui concerne sa manière de schématiser certaines caractéristiques aviaires. Cette simplification dans l’illustration facilita la reconnaissance des différents spécimens par le plus grand nombre. Après l’Amérique, Peterson s’intéresse à l’Europe et produit en1954,<em> Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe</em>, qui connait un succès mondial, étant vendu à plus de deux millions d'exemplaires. Par la suite, Peterson publie des guides de poche sur divers sujets, par exemple, sur les papillons et sur les coquillages.

Biographie
Terence Michael Shortt est un ornithologue et artiste canadien, né à Winnipeg le 1er mars 1911 et décédé à Toronto le 28 décembre 1986. À l'emploi du Musée royal de l’Ontario dès 1930, il participe à faire l'avancement de la recherche en ornithologie. En 1948, il devient chef de la section biologie du musée. Au cours de sa vie il a mené de nombreuses expéditions dans de multiples régions du monde tel que les îles Galapagos, l’Inde et l’Afrique. Pour explorer les îles Galapagos, il était accompagné de l’artiste animalier <a href="/omeka/items/show/145">Roger Tory Peterson</a>. Il rapporte de ses voyages des échantillons qui permettent d’enrichir les collections du musée.

Biographie
<p>Artiste suisse, Léo-Paul Robert appartient à une famille depuis longtemps sensibles aux arts visuels. Déjà Léopold Robert (1794–1835), formé à Paris et élève de Louis David, obtenait en 1814 une deuxième place au prix de Rome en gravure. Établi à Rome en 1818, il devint célèbre pour ses représentations de brigands romains, faisant de lui un précurseur du romantisme. Il y appelle en 1822 son frère Aurèle Robert (1805-1871), qui devient son graveur attitré. Après le suicide de Léopold en 1835, Aurèle diffuse l’œuvre de son frère et travaille comme portraitiste. Il vit à Paris et à Venise avant de se fixer en Suisse en 1853. <br /><br /> C’est là que naît le fils d’Aurèle, Léo-Paul (1851–1923), peintre-paysagiste qui obtiendra d'importants mandats de peinture murale au cours de son existence, tels que l'escalier du Musée d'art et d'histoire de Neuchâtel et la façade du Musée d'histoire de Berne. Ses aquarelles représentant des oiseaux et ses dessins de chenilles constituent la part prépondérante de son œuvre, totalisant presque mille planches. L'artiste intègre dans la composition de ses œuvres l'environnement des animaux, les fruits et insectes qui leur servaient de nourriture. Il a une préférence pour les petits chanteurs qu'il représente avec des poses reconnaissables par ceux qui les ont observés sur le terrain. Léo-Paul Robert innove et fait preuve d'un génie particulier en les peignant de manière à faire en sorte que l’observateur se place à leur niveau. Trois de ses fils deviendront peintres.<br /><br />Des onze enfants de Léo-Paul Robert, trois se consacrent à la peinture : Théophile (1879-1954), Philippe (1881-1930) et Paul-André (1901–1977). Théophile est formé à Florence et à Paris où il fréquente l'École des beaux-arts. Proche de Le Corbusier, son œuvre s’inscrit dans une recherche de la pureté classique. Il s'oriente finalement vers un art monumental religieux. Philippe se partage entre la peinture murale décorative et les tableaux de petits formats ayant pour sujet des paysages de Suisse, de Grèce ou d’Égypte. En ce qui a trait à l’art naturaliste, il développe une manière inédite de peindre la flore, associant abstraction ornementale et exactitude scientifique. Paul-André, demeuré à la maison familiale, poursuit davantage l'œuvre de son père. Ses illustrations de libellules du Jura constituent son œuvre principale. Son travail sur leurs larves lui vaut le titre de docteur honoris causa décerné par l’Université de Neuchâtel.</p>
