Il a exploré le Pacifique et le nord de l’Australie en 1846. Il rapporte de son voyage d’innombrables spécimens de plantes et d’animaux. C’est grâce à l’étude de ces échantillons qu’il devient lui même naturaliste. Il publie alors ses recherches et devient professeur de physiologie et d’anatomie comparée à l’Université de Londres. Dès la publication, en 1859, de De l’origine des espèces, Thomas Huxley devient un fervent défenseur de la théorie de l’évolution de <a href="/omeka/items/show/13">Darwin</a>. Son père était un portraitiste miniaturiste. Employé dès 15 ans dans une entreprise de pêche, il est envoyé à Terre-Neuve en 1827. Il s'intéresse alors à l'histoire naturelle de la région, en particulier aux insectes. En 1835, il devient agriculteur à Compton dans les Cantons de l’Est, où il se livre à des observations sur la faune et la flore du Bas-Canada. Trois ans plus tard, il se rend en Alabama toujours aux fins de recherches naturalistes. Épouvanté par la dureté de la vie sur le front pionnier et par l’horreur de l’esclavage, il regagne Londres. Il publiera plus de 40 ouvrages dont The Canadian Naturalist : a Series of Conversations on the Natural History of Lower Canada en 1840. En 1843, il est choisi pour une mission aux Antilles. Après un séjour en Jamaïque de 1844 à 1846, il revient à Londres et publie Birds of Jamaica. Illustrateur scientifique plutôt qu’artiste, Gosse a été élu membre associé de la Linnean Society of London en 1850 et Fellow de la Royal Society en 1856.
