Son père est médecin et son grand-père, Erasmus Darwin, était botaniste et zoologiste. D'abord peu intéressé par les études, il commence à se passionner par les espèces animales à l’université d’Edimbourg à partir de 1825. De 1831 à 1836, il fait partie d’une expédition de recherche de la Royal Navy. Les passagers du navire, le Beagle, ont initialement pour mandat de préciser le relevé des côtes de Patagonie. Mais pendant les cinq années du voyage, on fait escale sur pratiquement tous les continents. Il publie en 1839 son journal sous le titre Journal of Researches. C’est à partir de ces recherches qu’il développe ses premières vues sur l’évolution. Le scientifique entretient des relations étroites avec les autres savants de son époque. Il a particulièrement été influencé par les travaux d’Alfred Russel Wallace, grâce auxquels il peut mettre au point la théorie de la sélection naturelle. Il est ami avec le géologue Charles Lyell et le biologiste Thomas Huxley qui l’aident et qui défendent ses travaux. Les travaux de Darwin sont fortement contestés dès leur publication. L’opposition se fait à la fois religieuse et scientifique. Cependant, ces théories trouvent écho dans des sociétés savantes comme la Linnean Society et sont diffusées. Darwin a révolutionné la biologie avec son ouvrage; De l’origine des espèces, paru en 1850. Il est considéré comme le codécouvreur (avec Alfred Russel Wallace) de la théorie de l’évolution par la sélection naturelle. Son père, miniaturiste reconnu, a été son premier formateur. Il part ensuite étudier à Londres où il rencontre Joseph Wolf qui soutient alors son travail. Thorburn se fait connaître en illustrant Coloured figures of the birds of the British Islands. Un ouvrage publié de 1885 à 1898 pour sa plus grande partie par Thomas Powys, baron de Lilford, qui lui demande de poursuivre le travail de Keulemans, tombé malade. Thorburn réalise 268 planches sur un total de 421. Ses illustrations montrent fidèlement le milieu et l'habitat typique de chaque espèce. Thorburn est parmi les premiers artistes à délaisser le travail fait à partir de spécimens naturalisés, préférant les croquer sur le vif. Il est d’ailleurs l'un des premiers artistes animaliers à s'engager activement dans la lutte pour la protection de la nature. Il travaille bénévolement pour la Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, dont il illustre les cartes de v&oelig;ux de 1899 à 1935. Il peut fuir les guerres napoléoniennes et s’installe à Philadelphie en 1802-1803. D’abord marchand, il cesse bientôt ses activités commerciales pour s’adonner à sa passion pour les oiseaux qu'il observe et dessine depuis l’enfance. Pour ce faire, il parcourt le continent nord-américain et dès 1824, il cherche à faire publier le fruit de son travail en Grande-Bretagne où le marché est le plus favorable. En 1827, <a href="/omeka/items/show/159">William Home Lizars</a> accepte de publier Birds of America, entreprise qui se poursuivra bientôt sous la responsabilité de Robert Havell jr. et ce, jusqu’en 1838. L’ouvrage in-folio illustré de 435 planches coloriées à la main établira la renommée d’Audubon qui, après avoir un temps vécu alternativement en Europe et en Amérique, s’installe définitivement à New-York en 1839. De là, il travaille à l’édition grand in-octavo de Birds of America et prépare un ouvrage qui sera achevé par l’un de ses fils : Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Apprenti chez le graveur Ralph Beilby à Newcastle upon Tyne, il apprend la gravure sur cuivre tout en touchant à la gravure sur bois. Il adaptera ainsi le burin de la gravure sur cuivre à la gravure sur bois par la technique du bois dit «de bout». Cette technique permet à l'artiste de réaliser des scènes gravées aux détails plus précis et plus délicats. Si Bewick se montre un graveur remarquable, il est aussi un maquettiste novateur, équilibrant mieux le texte et l'image par l’intégration dans le texte de vignettes historiées. Ses représentations restent des témoins précieux de la vie paysanne anglaise du tournant du 19e siècle. L’intérêt pour l’&oelig;uvre de cet artiste ne s’est jamais démenti; aujourd’hui encore, les gravures de Thomas Bewick sont largement reproduites à l’époque de Noël. En ornithologie, l'essentiel de son travail est paru sous le titre History of British Birds, édité en deux tomes (1797 et 1804) et comportant deux cent huit gravures sur bois pour les espèces terrestres et deux cent quarante pour les oiseaux d'eau. Les huit éditions de cet ouvrage constituent l'un des plus grands succès de librairie de l'époque en histoire naturelle. Adolescent, il commence à vendre des animaux naturalisés, puis ouvre une boutique de taxidermie à Londres. Ses talents l’amènent à devenir taxidermiste puis conservateur à la Zoological Society of London en 1827. Il y développe une expertise renommée. C’est à Gould que s’adresse <a href="/omeka/items/show/13">Charles Darwin </a>pour identifier certaines espèces rapportées des Galápagos. Avec sa femme Elizabeth, Gould part en Australie en 1838, pour en reproduire la faune. Pas moins de sept grands folios illustrés seront publiés suite à ce voyage. Artiste de valeur lui-même, Gould sut s’entourer des meilleurs talents. Sa femme, morte en 1841, sera la première de ses illustrateurs. Suivront <a href="/omeka/items/show/254">Edward Lear</a>, bien connu pour ses poèmes humoristiques illustrés, <a href="/omeka/items/show/147">Joseph Wolf</a>, Edward Constantine Ritcher et William Matthew Hart. Au total, Gould aura publié plus de 40 in-folio éléphant comme ce fac-similé ici présenté, soit plus de 3 000 planches colorées à la main. En tout, on évalue que 500 000 copies de ces planches sont sorties des ateliers de Gould.
