Biographie
Naturaliste anglais, Mark Catesby peut être considéré comme le précurseur de l'ornithologie américaine. Il est formé par George Edwards, le naturaliste anglais le plus renommé au tournant du xviiie siècle, qui lui apprend la technique de la gravure sur cuivre. De 1712 à 1719, il effectue un premier long séjour en Amérique pour étudier la faune et la flore de la Virginie. Il visite aussi la Jamaïque en 1714. Entre temps en métropole, il fait un deuxième voyage dans le Nouveau Monde entre 1722 et 1726, en Caroline et en Floride avec une excursion aux Bahamas en 1725. Ce deuxième voyage est financé par plusieurs collectionneurs, notamment par Sir Hans Sloane à qui l'on doit l’extraordinaire collection à l'origine du <em>British Museum</em>. L'ouvrage de Catesby, <a href="http://atrium.umontreal.ca/notice/UM-ALEPH002172376" target="_blank"><em>The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands</em></a>, a été publié à Londres en parties de 1729 à 1747 et il comprend 220 gravures coloriées à la main. C’est le premier livre couleur à être exclusivement consacré à la faune nord-américaine. Anticipant <a href="/omeka/items/show/133">Aubudon</a> qui utilisera ce procédé avec plus de talent et de succès, Catesby est le premier à représenter ses spécimens dans leur environnement propre.
