<p align="JUSTIFY">Trois lithographies du même sujet présentant les trois états d'impression de<em> Birds of America </em>de J. J. Audubon. La première et la deuxième sont respectivement tirées de la première et deuxième édition alors que la troisième plus fortement modifiée est issue de la septième édition parue sous la direction de John Woodhouse Audubon. Dans son format <em>double elephant folio</em> (67x100cm), <em>Birds of America</em> est le plus grand livre d'ornithologie jamais publié. Il comporte 435 planches en couleurs, présentant 91 espèces d'oiseaux grandeur nature. Cinquante coloristes ont travaillé sur l'ouvrage, qui leur demanda dix ans d’efforts, de 1828 à 1838. Audubon réutilise ensuite ses illustrations pour une édition plus petite (in-octavo « royal », 16x25cm) en sept volumes, d’où proviennent les planches ici présentées.</p>

Biographie
<p>Darwin est un naturaliste anglais, né le 12 février 1809 et mort le 19 avril 1882. Son père est médecin et son grand-père, Erasmus Darwin, était botaniste et zoologiste. D'abord peu intéressé par les études, il commence à se passionner par les espèces animales à l’université d’Edimbourg à partir de 1825.</p>
<p>De 1831 à 1836, il fait partie d’une expédition de recherche de la <em>Royal Navy</em>. Les passagers du navire, le <em>Beagle</em>, ont initialement pour mandat de préciser le relevé des côtes de Patagonie. Mais pendant les cinq années du voyage, on fait escale sur pratiquement tous les continents. Il publie en 1839 son journal sous le titre <em>Journal of Researches. </em>C’est à partir de ces recherches qu’il développe ses premières vues sur l’évolution. Le scientifique entretient des relations étroites avec les autres savants de son époque. Il a particulièrement été influencé par les travaux d’Alfred Russel Wallace, grâce auxquels il peut mettre au point la théorie de la sélection naturelle. Il est ami avec le géologue Charles Lyell et le biologiste Thomas Huxley qui l’aident et qui défendent ses travaux. Les travaux de Darwin sont fortement contestés dès leur publication. L’opposition se fait à la fois religieuse et scientifique. Cependant, ces théories trouvent écho dans des sociétés savantes comme la <em>Linnean Society</em> et sont diffusées. Darwin a révolutionné la biologie avec son ouvrage; <em>De l’origine des espèces, </em>paru en 1850. Il est considéré comme le codécouvreur (avec Alfred Russel Wallace) de la théorie de l’évolution par la sélection naturelle.</p>
