Le travail de Buffon avait été abrégé et les suites à Buffon sont composées des extraits non publiés initialement dans l'<em>Histoire Naturelle</em>. Biographie
<span>John White est un artiste, explorateur et gouverneur colonial britannique. Il participe à différentes explorations du Nouveau Monde comme celle de Martin Frobisher, premier anglais à rencontrer les Inuits, qu'il accompagne en tant qu'artiste entre 1576 et 1578. Six ans plus tard, John White se joint également à l'expédition de Walter Raleigh, et joue un rôle important dans l'établissement en 1587 et en 1589, sur l'île de Roanoke, d’une première mais fort tragique colonisation anglaise en Amérique. John White publie ses dessins dans A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588) avec l'intention de réaliser une encyclopédie visuelle sur la région. Ses dessins connaissent par la suite une grande diffusion lorsqu’ils sont repris dans les Grands Voyages de Théodore de Bry qui les utilise pour illustrer son volume sur l’Amérique en 1590. Oubliée jusqu'au xixe siècle, l'importance de son œuvre est désormais reconnue : ce sont les premières représentations des Amérindiens, de la faune et de la flore de Nouveau Monde à parvenir en Angleterre. John White a également contribué à la reconnaissance de la contribution des artistes lors des voyages d'exploration.</span>
