Biographie
Issu de la noblesse, William Jardine avait rang de baronnet. Après avoir étudié la médecine à Paris et à Edimbourg, il gagne Jardine Hall, son domaine familial en Écosse où, au cours des années, il rassemble une immense collection d'oiseaux naturalisés du monde entier. Il les dessine au crayon et à la plume, puis grave lui-même les bois qui accompagnent ses ouvrages. Entre 1833 et 1843, paraissent 40 volumes de petit format regroupés sous le titre <em>The Naturalist's Library</em>, un projet éditorial qui domine toute son œuvre et qui résulte d'un partenariat avec son beau-frère, le graveur William Home Lizars (1788-1859). Ce dernier, fils de graveur, avait su par son talent s’imposer à Édimbourg et à l'échelle de la Grande-Bretagne. Destiné à un large public et vendu à un prix abordable, <em>The Naturalist's Library</em> constitue la plus vaste somme encyclopédique du xixe siècle sur les oiseaux, les poissons, les mammifères et les papillons. Le volume portant sur les perroquets et les perruches sera au Royaume-Uni la dernière publication d'importance en ornithologie contenant des illustrations gravées sur plaque métallique. Le texte, enrichi de gravures coloriées à la main, se détache du fond représentant l'habitat de l'espèce en noir et blanc. La plupart des dessins sont signés par James Hope Stewart, alors que certains le sont par Prideaux John Selby, Jardine lui-même ou <a href="/omeka/items/show/254">Edward Lear</a>.
